Summer Elementary Workshop Topics
Call of the Wild
All About Animals brings children into the amazing animal kingdom! Children learn about diverse, astounding creatures on earth as they experiment with camouflage and get hands-on with real tooth and claw replicas. Children see what’s inside animals and discover which animals are truly spineless! The Animal Tracks Take-Home lets children create casts of animal tracks just like real naturalists.
Chem in a Flash
Hop on board the chemistry express for a high-speed science experience! Perform instantaneous experiments in this fast-paced class on split-second reactions that go like mad! Take home an Action Flask for you own reactions!
Detective Science
Students will become science sleuths as they investigate how chemistry provides evidence at the scene of the crime. During this hands-on detective work, children will gather and test 'crime scene' clues, make and analyze their own fingerprints, decipher codes and encrypt messages.
Dry Ice-Capades
Children will be introduced to the scientific concepts of phase changes and states of matter. They will witness the phenomenon of sublimation as we demonstrate the unique properties of dry ice & the spectacular "smoke" it creates. The children will learn that dry ice is really frozen CO2 & will experience the Mad Science burp, a display of bubbling potions and, finally, a thrilling cemetery scene.
Earthworks
Take a voyage to the center of the Earth! We'll investigate the powerful process that shapes our planet and forms remarkable rocks, magnificent minerals, and glittering gems! Children will take home Ultraviolet Detectors which they build themselves!
Mad Machines
Discover simple machines! Unravel the power of pulleys, build catapults and claw grabber devices! We’ll compile all that we’ve learned & build our own Mad Science Drag Racers to race and take home!
Optical Illusions
In this program, students will learn about the eye, how we see, and why our eyes are so easily tricked. They will also discover that water drops can mimic lenses, which can be used to magnify or shrink images. The use of mirrors in optical illusions is easily understood after students build their own periscopes.
Slime Time
Giant molecule chains called polymers are vital to modern civilization. In this program, we will explore, create and play with the most entertaining and useful molecule known to science, and discover its many shapes and forms. Children even make their own slime that they get to take home and keep!
Super Structures
Discover the strengths of triangles, cylinders and arches. Learn how combinations of these shapes make for sturdy homes and skyscrapers! Use teamwork to build your own super structures as well as an earthquake-proof building!
