Summer Elementary Workshop Topics
Call of the Wild
All About Animals brings children into the amazing animal kingdom! Children learn about diverse, astounding creatures on earth as they experiment with camouflage and get hands-on with real tooth and claw replicas. Children see what’s inside animals and discover which animals are truly spineless! The Animal Tracks Take-Home lets children create casts of animal tracks just like real naturalists.
Students will become science sleuths as they investigate how chemistry provides evidence at the scene of the crime. During this hands-on detective work, children will gather and test 'crime scene' clues, make and analyze their own fingerprints, decipher codes and encrypt messages.
Children will be introduced to the scientific concepts of phase changes and states of matter. They will witness the phenomenon of sublimation as we demonstrate the unique properties of dry ice & the spectacular "smoke" it creates. The children will learn that dry ice is really frozen CO2 & will experience the Mad Science burp, a display of bubbling potions and, finally, a thrilling cemetery scene.
Discover amazing things that glow bright in the dark and come to light! Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology! Use your Blacklight Writer to make secret messages that only you can see!
Lights, Color, Action!
Using a Newton's color wheel that they have built themselves, students in this class will prove that white light really is made up of all the colors of the rainbow! They will witness the wonders of chromatography in an exciting demonstration and will then be introduced to the concept of diffraction. Children will then experience this first hand wearing "rainbow" glasses.
Grab your popcorn but don't sit back…we're going to learn first-hand how advances in science and technology make our favorite special effects possible! Children will take home a Cartoon Creator that they've made themselves! It's Einstein meets Spielberg in a class of 3..2..1…action!
Slide down the colorful pH scale and dip into the world of acids and bases! Explore the pH extremes with your Reaction Tube in what is sure-to-be a popping experience! Discover whether liquids found in your home are acids or bases using your personal pH Paper!
Giant molecule chains called polymers are vital to modern civilization. In this program, we will explore, create and play with the most entertaining and useful molecule known to science, and discover its many shapes and forms. Children even make their own slime that they get to take home and keep!
Meteors and comets and asteroids, oh my! Explore the phenomenal events that take place in the night sky! Investigate asteroid impacts and craters on the moon, cook up a comet made of dry ice, and discover how meteors burn up in our atmosphere.
Join Bernoulli and Newton as we take this exciting look at the science behind the properties of air... under pressure. Use a vortex generator to create air pockets with a punch, and levitate ping-pong balls in a defiance of gravity!
